The West Shore Career-Technical District is required to meet mandates issued by the Ohio Department of Education. One mandate is to assist Career-Technical students to be "college ready." "College ready" is defined as students meeting a certain benchmark on the college placement exams, ACT or SAT. These test scores indicate how well a student will perform in college. The purpose for this state mandate is to avoid students taking remedial coursework at the college level in Math and English. Remedial work cost a student time and money while pursuing a college degree.
The West Shore Career-Technical District has developed the "College Ready Initiative." This initiative consists of students in their junior year having access to ACT and SAT practice test available on the Ohio Career Information System (OCIS) website. Students are encouraged to take the ACT and/or the SAT at the end of their junior year. In the fall of the senior year, students are asked to share their results with their Career-Tech teacher. If a student cannot afford the ACT or SAT, we offer the ASVAB test every October. Although ASVAB is not a college entrance exam, its scores are correlated to the ACT and SAT. If the accepted benchmark is not met on any of these tests, students are offered Compass Prep sessions. These sessions are computer based remedial lesson in Math and English.
The West Shore Career-Technical District is committed to helping its students succeed not only in their Career-Technical program but also in the pursuit of a college degree in the future.
