At its Aug. 20 meeting, the Board of Education passed resolutions recognizing the many decades of service lifelong Lakewood residents Mark Twohig and Don McQuilken have given to the Community Recreation and Education Department.

The Board also accepted a $1,300 check from the Adult Athletic, Youth Athletic and Community Recreation & Education commissions from proceeds from the debut Commissioners Youth Scholarship Softball Tournament held this month. The money will go toward providing scholarships for youth to participate in Rec Dept. activities.

As lifelong, Lakewoodites, Twohig and McQuilken have particpated in activities or worked with the Rec Dept. since their childhood days. Twohig and McQuilken both retired from their Rec Dept. commission posts in 2010 after 18 and 35 years of service, respectively. McQuilken also served as a Board of Education member from 1971-1975.

Superintendent Patterson thanked the two men for the many lives they have touched through the years of behind-the-scenes service on the rec commissions. The resolutions passed give the two commissioner emeritus status and the lifelong privilege of attending any athletic or community event  for free.

Thanks to both Mark Twohig and Don McQuilken for their tremendous service.
