The new Horticulture Outdoor Learning Lab at Lakewood High School was officially dedicated on May 24 with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting for the 3,600-square-foot space that graces the front entrance of the school. Horticulture teacher Mark Rathge, who collaborated with the Lakewood Garden Club on the project, called the completion of the lab "a true dream come true."

This new lab, with four raised planting beds, stone walkways and
additional landscape plantings, not only beautifies the front entrance of the high school, but more importantly it adds a significant dimension to the current horticulture program by linking indoorclassroom and greenhouse knowledge with the external natural environment and gives students a real-world experience.

The Lakewood Garden Club, which came up with the idea for the lab as a memorial project to honor former club member Mary Jo Potts, who was the longtime education committee chair for the club, spearheaded the fund-raising for the $20,000 project. Major donors include the Robert L. Potts Family, Lakewood Kiwanis, Lakewood Alumni Foundation, Nordson Corp. and Lowe's Toolbox for Education.

If you haven't been by the high school lately, take a moment to come by and see the beautiful new space.
