Physical Education Dept.

MISSION STATEMENT:

The mission of the Lakewood City Schools Physical Education Department is to educate minds, develop healthy bodies, and promote positive attitudes towards lifetime physical activity, fitness, and sports skills. With a quality physical education program in place, each student will be empowered with the knowledge and skills necessary to make responsible lifestyle choices that directly impact his/her health and well-being.

CURRENT NEWS:

This is an exciting time in the content area of Physical Education. Beginning this school year, the Physical Education and Wellness Measure will be a part of every school’s report card. The Physical Education Index is only one part of the Physical Education and Wellness Measure. The other components are Compliance with the Local Wellness Policy, Participation in the Body Mass Index Screening, and Participation in the Physical Activity Program.

Why Now? The Ohio Department of Education is looking to improve teacher consistency and learning outcomes in P.E. classes as well as address the obesity epidemic in the U.S. (17% of children ages 2-19 are obese in this country, a number that has tripled since 1980).

Senate Bill 210 was passed into law in 2010 and includes various assessments based on six Physical Education Academic Content Standards.

There are 12 assessments, all of which ARE NOT high stakes achievement tests. Every Lakewood student will undergo 12 PE assessments at some point in each of their respective grade bands (K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12). The school report card will identify a Physical Education Index score of “High, Moderate or Low.” The index score identifies the extent to which Lakewood students are successful in meeting the benchmarks contained in Ohio’s Physical Education Standards.
